It was said that it was on a branch because it might explore
approaches that do not pan out.

Whether it has or not, how is it any different than any of the other
changes that go into trunk? You wanted the development to take place
in trunk and now it will. Paul has said he has made sure the tests
run over all ra layers which is more that can be said for most content
that goes to trunk.
