To be honest the whole approach with depth and sparse directories looks bad-conceived as it jeopardizes the main functionality in the favor of subtle benefits (save a little on typing with code completion).
IMHO the whole related functionality shall be disabled in client by default (globally) and activated only by some configuration parameter.
And as for temp files that user do not want to add - there is an SVN ignore.
