make check times / keeping up with the joneses

To those who saw the IRC conversation about make check times.

I once saw a time of 11 minutes, which Paul rightfully envied.

But ever since, my make checks have taken wildly different amounts of time
to finish, all of them longer. One was 20 minutes, another was 38 minutes.
So something must have been different in the 11 min. run -- though I think
it was a successful run, no time saved due to failures.
pburba: 19 minutes isn't so bad after all.
