This branch is *almost* inactive. I need to ponder on backporting
r35687. Once I'm done with that, then I'll delete the branch.

All the changes from explore-wc have been reintegrated, though it
isn't ready-to-activate right now. Some #ifdef work needs to happen in
entries.c first.
