This is basically mine (since Nik Clayton seems to be busier than I am).
  I tried to sync this back up to trunk during the last OSCON, but it
was a complete disaster (it has diverged a great deal, plus there were
some messed up merges in the interim), and I never committed it. I'm
inclined to just delete it as it stands and reapply the patches that
(mostly) Nik and I had committed to a new branch (if that's acceptable).
  I actually have uncommitted changes in a WC on my laptop that also
date to OSCON that include some other missing bits to the Perl bindings.

No promises, but I still intend to continue work on this topic when I
can get some round tuits freed up...
