Looks good to me.

The comment around BASE on a replaced node has got me thinking tho...
The copy really should only exist in WORKING, and BASE shouldn't be
changed. So really, it is more of a "BASE is unchanged, but if you'd
like access to the pristine data for the copy sitting in WORKING, then
<here> it is."

In any case, this is a good improvement, so please feel free to commit!
