1.5.3 rolling on Oct. 8

Hi all.

I'm currently planning on rolling 1.5.3 on Oct. 8, which is two weeks away.
STATUS is starting to get a few entries in it, and there are a couple of patches
and bugfixes which have been specifically requested by our users. Please review
and nominate any additional fixes which should be in 1.5.3.

The date is somewhat flexible, and if people feel that it comes a little too
soon on the heals of 1.5.2, we can push it back a little.
