Merging from 1.4 servers without revision ranges

With 1.5 RC7, I have by accident executed an "svn merge" without
revision ranges against an 1.4 server (I was even merging from the same
location as my WC location). The merge took a while, reported many
changes (additions) and actually replaced one file, although there was
actually nothing to merge. Maybe SVN should reject such range-less
merges at all when it detects that it's talking to 1.4 servers?
