For some perspective, I dug up some info:

RHEL 2 supported until 2009 ships swig 1.1
RHEL 3 supported until 2010 ships swig 1.1
RHEL 4 supported until 2012 ships swig 1.3.21
RHEL 5 supported until 2014 ships swig 1.3.29
