one possibility I haven't seen mentioned in this discussion is, to
make the 1.5 clients error out when --depth is used on a 1.4 wc and
requiring the user to do the format bump explicitly (either by
acknowledging a "are you really, REALLY sure ..." question, or by
something like "scn bump")
