are you saying that this error message is expected,
'http://localhost:28733/svn-test-work/repositories/merge_tests-63/A/D/gamma'
path not found

but that something earlier in the test is faulty?

I'm asking this because with ra_serf the client also receives a 404 File not
found response, but ra_serf is ignoring this. So if I'm correct, for ra_serf
the correct fix is to make it not ignore this 404 error.
