My employer is wondering if any of the commiters are interested in being
paid to finish the work on the much-discussed 'atomic renames' problem:
http://subversion.tigris.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=898
I don't want to delay or conflict with the current work toward 1.5, but
due to the fact that we can "lose" data in some cases as documented in
the user manual (as well as others we've found), it would be a good
thing to get this done.
I'm also coding a workaround involving modifications to svnmerge.py:
http://www.orcaware.com/pipermail/svnmerge/2007-May/000913.html
..(where I'd love feedback) but even this leaves some aspects of the
issue unresolved (like 3rd-party tool support, many corner cases, and
potential data loss via 'svn update').
We would like to pay an independent contractor to develop and integrate
this as a solution into the main subversion trunk with the same license
as the rest of subversion. I seek a proposal (pls send directly to me;
very short and very informal or just an email reply is fine, initially)
indicating how you'd suggest addressing issues such as the following:
- design/algorithm (if there were needs to differ from the current
TODO list on atomic renames)
- could you get stable binaries to us for it, between releases?
- how tested, when
- your experience and knowledge, specifically as related to this task
- what "done" means and how verified
- by when it could be completed
Any comments or suggestions are also welcome. Thanks for reading this
far.
Best regards,
Luke Call
