Summer of Code: deadline approaches.

Hi folks,

We have exactly four days left for submitting an 'organizational
application' to Google Summer of Code. Assuming Google selects our
organization, we'll be blessed with a small group of summer student
interns. This will hopefully be our third summer doing this.

I've taken the liberty of updating our project_tasks.html page from
last summer, so it now lists 6 tasks that could be done by a student
over the course of a summer. If you have objections/suggestions,
please speak up:

We need to pick out some mentors as well. In theory, Google assumes
that each student will have one mentor, and that most of the
communication will be 1-on-1. In practice, we've used mentors to
check up on the health/status of students, but when it comes to design
discussions and code reviews the whole list (whole developer
community) has 'mentored' students, just like we interact with any
other code-writing contributors. (Also, this year there's going to be
a 2 month grace period between 'student is selected' and 'student
starts coding', so that the student has lots of time to get to know
the code and the community before summer begins.)

In any case, we still need to pick some mentors and put them on our
application form. Among the full committers, can we have some
volunteers?

Finally, we need to choose how many students we'd like to have. My
own gut feeling is that the perfect number would probably be "three".
We're all pretty busy these days, and I don't think we really have the
bandwidth to manage more than that.
