some gaps in my subversion knowledge

Hi, i have a rails app that i imported into subversion, i didnt create the
suggested dir structure (trunk, tags, branches) but it worked fine. I
deleted my working copy, and then checked out a revision from subversion,
all was fine.

I then read about the suggested directory structure, and wondered where my
project had been copied as i had not created a trunk dir, i went looking in
my repository, and found no trace of it.

What really confused me is that my project was 15Meg, yet my subversion
repository was only 3.4Meg?????? how can this be?

I have removed all trace of my project, but am still able to check it out
from subversion, where is it coming from????

Can anyone please explain this to me.

Many thanks.
