This is probably a naive question, but...

Given the examples of a product using some number of components (and
ignoring the discussion about best practices, using branches, and so on for
the moment) wouldn't externals be an appropriate way to go?

I've seen a few references to externals having their own set of problems at
this point (although no concrete list of what they are -- does anyone have /
maintain such a list), but wouldn't the effort be better spent on getting
externals to the point where they could support this rather than trying to
provide a new mechanism?
