BDB 1.4.x Backports

Just an FYI, I proposed a few backports (r20218, r20428) to the 1.4.x
branch, which should bring the last of the fixes required for the new
BDB support in. If a few people with some BDB background could take a
look and approve the backports it would be great. I'd really like to
get moving on rolling a new 1.4.x release candidate, now that we've
actually got fixes for the majority of the known problems.
