Yes, that's the true meat of my proposal. I've proposed two instances
this would be useful outside of tagging, which I've felt from the
beginning to be one of the weakest arguments in favor; it's somewhat
unfortunate, in my mind, that people can't get over the fact that this
imitates to some extent, at least, CVS's tag functionality. And,
actually, it would not be creating a second way to reference
information--it's enhancing a third (revision numbers, dates, and the
pre-defined labels HEAD, PREV, etc.) Subversion supports identifying
revisions three different ways, but the third one is woefully
under-powered for what it could be.
