Sorry, but I really must vote -1 on this:
Making the built-in default behaviour subtly different from anything
that it is possible to define in the config file is an invitation for
extreme confusion.

I think it is an absolute requirement that any method we invent for this
be definable in the config file, so that it can be re-used for tunnel
agents with arbitrary syntax for passing port values.

For completeness, I should also mention that:

(1) people also ask from time to time whether it is possible to specify
"-i identityfile" through an URL.

(2) We could simply tell people to configure their client appropriately
- - both openssh and putty can be configured to automatically use
alternate ports on a per-hostname basis.
