I'm not a sed-head, so someone else will have to comment. It just
struck me a very inefficient to start up the Perl interpreter for each
and every file like that, just to gain the auto-backup.

I feel no need to rewrite it in Perl, nor do I think it is worthwhile
doing in Python either...
