hi malcolm,

ok. i did not realize that.

YES, i now know it's stated in INSTALL ... i'd allowed myself to be 'led' by the fact the
"./configure --help" output (which is my usual starting point for build documentation) includes:

        Optional Packages:
          --with-PACKAGE[=ARG] use PACKAGE [ARG=yes]
          --without-PACKAGE do not use PACKAGE (same as --with-PACKAGE=no)
          --with-apr=PATH prefix for installed APR, path to APR build tree

which, to my (admittedly incorrect) read, implies that
(a) apr *is* an "Optional Package"
and,
(b) --without-apr turns its use *off*

might i suggest a clarification in the configure output? if ONLY to state at/near those lines
"APR is NOT OPTIONAL, READ 'INSTALL'"?

ok.

fwiw, it *has* been working -- or at least, NOT COMPLAINING for ages ...

learn something new every day :-}

clear. it's a choice i frequently make -- that is, including defaults -- for the sake of clarity.

thx,

richard
