You ignored the parenthetical:

With a filesystem, you can delete the old "revisions" if they are never
going to be needed again (or you can archive them to tape). In terms of
storage itself, Subversion will never be worse, but in terms of
management, I'm not the first person to ask for 'svn obliterate' to
remove unnecessary binaries from a repository.
