I dunno. I sympathize with the people who are complaining about the
complexity. People have a right to expect that a VCS won't munge your
stuff. But I think this issue is going to come up again. We're going
to see a lot of people putting OO documents in Subversion
repositories, and depending on the size of their project, it's not
hard to imagine that some of them will complain about space usage.

I'd be surprised if other version control systems did much better, though.
