I'd go further, and say that the default configuration must not have
clients blindly running server-provided scripts.

I'm not wholly opposed to client-side hooks for this sort of thing, but
I think people who want them need to recognize that the best we could do
is a solution which (a) requires configuration on every client to make
work, and (b) is a nightmare in cross-platform environments.
