BTW, I've just remembered that such a form (a name followed by a ':')
is used as a path under RISC OS (and "root" is even a defined path on
my machines, so there would be a clash here!). I haven't checked what
the Subversion port does concerning the filenames, though.

However I think there would be no problems with more special characters
followed by a ':', such as '/:' (which would also be shorter).

But what about making prefixes configurable?
