Thanks for the detailed explanation!

Thanks for the patch Kouhei, I have applied it to my working copy and
confirm that a tarball rolled with it produces working Ruby bindings.

There is now one more bindings patch to review in 1.3.x STATUS, so get
to it people. For those interested, I've created the paradoxically
named 1.3.x-dev branch, which is 1.3.x, but with all the nominated
changes merged in. This is the code I've been using to roll test
tarballs and check whether any problems still block the RC.

Just to restate this, in its current state, 1.3.x doesn't build in
release mode, let alone pass bindings tests. As far as I am aware, all
the changes now in STATUS need to be approved and merged for the release
to proceed.

Also, still looking for a perl bindings guru to take a look at the test
crash there. It is our last-obstacle-of-the-day to rolling RC1.
