So, here we go for another variant. It caches a NULL handle instead of
introduce new global variables. I'm not setup to really check if it fixes
the leak, so if anyone could verify it would be great!

And I'm not sure about who should have credit in the log message. Feel
free to add to that. I just saw the patch on the dev@ list; I don't mean
to not give anyone credit who deserves it:-)
