log4j was cloned as log4c, log4perl, and LuaLogging, so that is exactly
one API that is different from my personal reality. ;-)

And I suspect that log4j uses the same backend code and just exposes
multiple methods, which is exactly what I suggested we could do with
#define's, so really, there isn't difference here anyways.

I wish I had to time to take a straight razor to Apache and move it's
logging code into APR, so Subversion could just swallow that whole
(warts and features alike). I just rewrote most of the logging
internals for Qpsmtpd so I know it would be very useful not to reinvent
the wheel at every juncture (gosh, I guess that's why APR is so vital to
_this_ project ;-)..
