Man page install location wrong on Mac OS X

On my stock Mac OS X 10.4 box, man wants man pages for binaries
located in /usr/local/bin to live in /usr/local/share/man. (See /usr/
share/misc/man.conf on said box.)

By default make install places them at /usr/local/man.

Can we have the default changed when building on Mac OS X? (I'd
prepare a patch, but I'm afraid I'm out of my element with autoconf,
etc.)
