I explained in my original post why that isn't always an option.

Oh, certainly I can write a Windows-specific provider. Doing so will
make Windows users happy (at least, those using Win2k and newer). It
will add about the same amount of #fdefing into the code as the other
way would. But I'm hoping for a more generic solution that can be used
on other systems, too.
