Ok. That's a good thing. It should also ensure that small aspects such
as punctuation of error messages is consistent with other translated
software.

Usually you don't. :-) You'll be offered. Being a more-than-one-person
team helps here. We understand that as soon as the translation is
committed to the main repository, it helps to have commit access :-)

Until now, we have not worked with string or code freezes. A script
verifies po-file integrity on commit, rejecting if it fails the check.
We also run a script (twice a week) which checks all major branches
for translation state. Results are mailed to dev@.

We do require that you commit your work to trunk, then port that work
to any relevant branches (whenever possible), so that trunk always is
current and most up to date. This also ensures all translations being
in all releases, or the old ones missing out, but never the newer
ones.
