It's because of what I call the "Fridge Factor" ("Fridge" being short
for "Refrigerator").

If you have real work to do and aren't terribly excited about doing it,
or--even worse--if it's something that you don't want to do, you'll be
constantly nagged by the knowledge that the top of your fridge needs
dusting. The only way to alleviate this problem is to go and dust the
fridge.

And of course, once you're on top of the fridge, you'll notice something
else that needs to be done, and so on and so on until the feeling of
guilt for not doing what you were avoiding in the first place becomes so
overwhelming that you just sit down and do it.

Sleep", and "Navel Gazing".
