By this you seem to be implying that the client code is obtaining the locks, not
the server providing the locks to the client as an atomic operation. If the
server is doing all of the heavy lifting, it should not be difficult at all to
roll back the locks when the conflict is noted. Locking is a transaction, isn't
it, even in this recursive case?
