Hmm. I'm not able to reproduce this on my system:

garibaldi: /Volumes/Slave/fitz/svn-work/subversion-1.1.0-rc2>uname -a
Darwin garibaldi.local 7.5.0 Darwin Kernel Version 7.5.0: Thu Aug 5
19:26:16 PDT 2004; root:xnu/xnu-517.7.21.obj~3/RELEASE_PPC Power
Macintosh powerpc
garibaldi: /Volumes/Slave/fitz/svn-work/subversion-1.1.0-rc2>glibtool
--version
ltmain.sh (GNU libtool) 1.5 (1.1220 2003/04/05 19:32:58)

I wonder if something is wrong with your glibtool--are you running the
same version? It doesn't seem to be picking up the processor
architecture (mine did):

...
configure: Apache Portable Runtime (APR) library configuration
checking for APR... reconfig
configuring package in apr now
checking build system type... powerpc-apple-darwin7.5.0
checking host system type... powerpc-apple-darwin7.5.0
checking target system type... powerpc-apple-darwin7.5.0
Configuring APR library
Platform: powerpc-apple-darwin7.5.0
...
