The original diagrams were made using Powerpoint and looked awful, with
the exception of the one at the bottom of this page:

... which was made on OSX using Omnigraffle.

But then O'Reilly redrew all the diagrams when they published the book,
and that's what you're seeing in the online version of the book.

According to the back of the treeware book, the diagrams were redrawn by
Jessamyn Read, using Macromedia Freehand 9 and Adobe Acrobat 6.
