Weird svn up error message when target ../.. is no working copy

This got me confused for a short moment (rev 1.0.5 cygwin build):

> sven@io ~/admin/subversion-addons $ svn up ../..
> svn: Path '../..' ends in '..', which is unsupported for this
> operation
> sven@io ~/admin/subversion-addons $ svn up ..
> Fetching external item into '../subversion-addons/cvs2svn'
> At revision 458.

So if .. is not allowed at the end of a path given to "svn up", why does
"svn up .." work? And actually, "svn up ../.." works quite nicely if
../.. is a working copy (which it wasn't in the above example). So the
error message is simply wrong there.
