Russell and I are already planning on doing this, for all swig languages.

He posted a partial patch:

I haven't had time to finish it off and commit it yet, because I've been
swept up into fixing apr so that apr-0 and apr-1 can live side-by-side. I
hope to have that done today, after which this bindings issue will be one of
2 things at the top of my todo list. (The other being finishing my cvs2svn
issues).
