Are you saying you want the abstraction part to happen on a branch, or
Greg's new backend, or both?

I was only saying that I'd prefer Greg's changes to happen on trunk,
since I don't think they'll have many points of interference with
other trunk code (thanks to the abstraction).

I have no opinion on the best way to do the abstraction. Maybe branch
is better for that, dunno.
