reporter looking for a good example of source code evolution

Sorry for the off-topic-ness, though it's not too far from the concept of
revision control...

I received a request for the following from a reporter for a national
(semi-technical) magazine who wants to illustrate an important open source
concept for the general public. If you can think of a good example
snippet of code showing an interesting evolution over time, drop a note to
Jesse Freund <jesse@thinkcorps.com>, who I'm sure will give appropriate
credit.

Thanks in advance,
