Then how come that DB 4.0 was recommended ever since I joined the list last
May until there was 4.2? I'd say *no* version of BDB prior to 4.2 should ever
have been recommended if what you say is true...
I think the INSTALL (/tags/1.0.0) should mention something other than the
text below if what you say is true. (Although I have only seen reports like
this about 4.1...)

You should try to use the latest version of BerkeleyDB 4.X. At
the time of writing, 4.2.52 is the latest version; we *strongly*
recommend using it over 4.1 or 4.0. Not only is the fastest and
most stable version we've seen, but it also enables Subversion
repositories to automatically clean up database journal files to
