This is cool...I was just about to start digging into this issue myself
this week. Your patch seems to work for me after some quick testing
(and a BIG perf increase on our large working copies -- a few seconds vs
more than 2 mins before patch). I'm running it through the full test
suite now.

However, IIRC from past discussions, the desired direction is for the
api's to take a single 'depth' argument indicating how far to recurse --
can a core developer verify?

As you alluded to, it looks fairly easy to modify your patch to do that.
  If you would rework it to do that I would be happy to run the full
test suite on it for Windows and Linux and root for it from the partial
committers bench. Of course, you may want to wait for a full committer
to comment on the 'depth' thing before doing more work...
