I'd certainly be happier with a design which didn't require spooling it
at all, but spooling it to a file seems much better than spooling it
into the database.

Yeah, I think that was a pipe dream; I'm told svk uses it, for
instance. It might be possible to factor the two bits of code together
at some point, though.
