Ahh, that's a good question.

There is an answer, and it is slightly complex. Will you forgive me
if I delay on the full reply until after I'm done with 1.0.0-beta1
(see my other mail about Josander's bad net connection)? I will
explain all; it just needs a few paragraphs which I'd prefer not to
rush.

(Note that this procedure is not necessarily the procedure for all
time, it's just something we settled on to work around a minor nit
with the current svn_version.h.)
