This is not an opinion about the $^W vs "use warnings" issue, just an
aside comment. According to the Perl5-porters mailing list
(http://www.xray.mpe.mpg.de/mailing-lists/perl5-porters/2003-12/msg00048.html):

    Leon Brocard is now the pumpking for the 5.005xx maintainance branch of
    perl. The plan for 5.00504 is roughly the same than the plan for 5.6.2 :

Note that the message is dated Dec, 2003. So it seems the Perl5 porters
not only *do* support 5.005, but they're investing resources in
releasing updates...
