Apache URL rewriting

I'd like to map externally visible portions of my repository to
shorter URLs. As an example: http://server/svn/trunk/projects/project1
can be accessed with http://server/svn/p1

I've tried various combinations of Apache directives (Alias,
RewriteRule, and ProxyPass) without success.

Might someone know how such URL rewriting can be acheived?
