The reasons are two-fold, both of which have been mentioned here:

  - It's not such a bright idea to roll a tarball the day after you
    spent all night cramming in the last couple of features/fixes
    scheduled for that release.

  - It's not such a bright idea to tell your Release person -- who
    volunteers his precious time for little more than some public
    praise and the knowledge that he's helping the community -- that
    he has but a few hours to get the job done.
