I don't understand your complaint. Are you objecting to the fact that
the 'new' svn silently upgrades working copies to format 3
automatically, without giving the user a choice? Would you rather have
had some sort of 'upgrade' script to run?

I don't understand this scenario: why are you using an old client at
all? Sorry if I'm being dense.
