Btw, we didn't forget to send a mail -- we had a time crunch, and
decided to commit the changes to a branch *first* because that's a
compact way of communicating what we're planning. Then someone would
ask (heh), and we could respond, with diffs to refer to for clarity.

When the probability of the changes getting consensus is high, then
it's more efficient to be committing the work on a branch *while*
discussing (because the branch itself is an adjunct to the
discussion), instead of having lots of communications turnarounds
before any work gets done.

Kinda like the whole latency problem that ultimately started this... :-)
