No protocol incompatibilities are going to mangle your repository.
They all manifest themselves as failed network operations: a commit
errors out before getting started, or a checkout results in an empty
working copy, and so on. No need to worry about losing data.

By running a mishmash of client and server versions, though, you're
pretty much guaranteeing that you're not going to get any technical
support when you see a weird error. :-) The first words out of our
mouth will be, "update everything to the latest version and try
again."
