Update of compressed text-base patch

I've updated Eric Dorland's compressed text-base patch[1] so that it
applies to the current trunk. If there is interest, I'd consider
trying to keep it up to date, but there are still a few things I'd
like to change and many things to clean up so please don't pester the
svn developers for inclusion in 1.0; I don't expect to have the time
to complete it before the freeze.

Feedback is appreciated, but go easy: this is my first work on
svn. :)
