Berkeley DB is known to have issues on multi-processor machines.
While the data you posted is interesting, I would discourage deep
investigation (unless you just feel like it) until you can verify that
it still happens with DB 4.2.x (which is supposed to be coming out
Real Soon Now, and which is supposed to address those known problems).
